Aphids

Aphids, whether black, green, or yellow, are all destructive and cause a lot of damage. They will make the leaves turn yellow and destroy buds and flowers. Also, they usually attract other insects.

Control: small fish, frequently washing them into the water, or raising the water level to overflowing and rinsing them out of the pond. Diatomaceous earth has also been proven when dusted on them. An herbal control made of thyme and mint oil is made by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals and is safe for fish.
Caddsfly Larvae

These insects do little damage but in high numbers they can be annoying.
They constantly chew of bits of plants to add to their protective cases.

Control: Fish, and pesticide Dimilin will also work.
China Mark Moth

Insects - PondUtah
This is one of the most prevalent of the water damaging insects. They cut little pieces of the plant to cover itself while it sleeps or feeds. It will cut new pieces everyday, stripping the plant of all its leaves. The moth will generally stay on waterlily type plants but will wonder off to infect other plants. If there is a heavy infestation, any plant touching the water will be attacked.

Control: Bacillus thuringiensis has been shown to be effective.

Cucumber Beetles

Cucumber beetles are little and yellow and black stripped. These beetles do a great job on destroying flowers.

Dragonflies

Dragonflies are great for ponds they eat bugs. Every pond should have them! Large fish can eat dragonfly larvae though. They also consume up to 200 mosquitoes a day.
Japanese Beetles

Japanese beetles damage a lot of plants and marginals. Most prone to attack are water cannas and taros. Big fleshy leaves really seem to appeal these insects.

Control: A new product called Japanese beetle repellent is made with nem and has been helpful but needs to be applied often.
Lotus Borer

The lotus borer will show up in the pond after the lotus has been growing in the pond for a few years.
These insects are generally invisible. The leaves and flowers often collapse after the insect attacks.

Control: It is best to remove all affected foliage and clean up well at the end of the season.
Mealybugs Mealybugs can be difficult to combat in the water garden. But there is not usually a problem outdoors. If you over winter your pond plants you can get them in the house.

Control: Houseplant insecticides, submerge the plants in water, for two to three days. Or you can cut the plant back severely.
Spider Mites Spider mites are generally not a problem except in winter storage and in very hot dry summers.

Control: Submerge plants for a day or two, remove the bugs, spray with a pesticide if they are indoors. After submerging them for a day or two in summer, you can move them back to the pond.
Weevils Usually weevils only show up on waterlily leaves. If they do get on any other plant, they do not cause a lot of damage.

Control: Remove the affected parts of the plant. That way they will not spread. To prevent from spreading, freeze any saved hibiscus seed or dust in diatomaceous earth.
Whiteflies Whiteflies usually will attack hibiscus, mint, and some other plants.

Control: Submerge the plants for two or three days. Or remove from the pond and spray with a pesticide.
